Google Play - Tests beta and alpha

Hi all, I've changed today my app on google play from version 1.0 to version 2.0, with of course a different apk. It took about 1 hour for Google to update the file on Google Play, and during this time my version 1.0, that people could still download, wasn't working well because they couldn't reach the updates of that version anymore. Not the end of the world, but for an hour my app looked stupid to whoever was downloading it. I'd like to avoid that in the future, especially for paid apps. Then I noticed that there are the options of uploading apk files for Alpha and Beta testing. So first of all, what's the difference between alpha and beta ? Then, would that offer me a way to upload a new version, have it recognized by Google Play, then when I want to, have the released version replaced by this test version without it taking an hour or two ? Do I make sense ? Cheers ! Nico
