Complete Rookie, need help choosing a cheapish server for Self Hosting

Hey guys! I am completely new to App Dev. I have got as far as I can with the Plugins available through Buzztouch, and want to source plugins from other places now, and customise. Trouble is I haven't the foggiest about all this Self Hosting LAMP Stacks, and what kind of hosting/cloud/virtual server I need.... Would really appreciate some advice on the subject. I have found the how to's on what to do once you have a domain.... just that I am stuck already!! Ta x

Would something link the "Start Up" package in the link below be appropriate? It says Linux... so I think I am on the right lines (hopefully!)... https://www.123-reg.co.uk/web-hosting/#faq

Hi, I'd choose one of these: http://www.hostgator.com/shared the Baby Plan or http://www.arvixe.com/linux_web_hosting the Personal Class. You got millions of choices out there. If you need any help setting it up, send me PM I'll help you out. Cheers

If you're looking for a really fast British-grown server, then my cousin has one. He's based in Somerset and the speed of the server is so fast that ven the speed of the fastest internet can't catch up. I host everything with him, and it seems just like any other server, to be honest. Their website and stuff looks old, but at least they are simple to understand. I am aware that maybe his prices are a little overpriced, but if you need to email for support, they usually reply in under 10 minutes! www.virtualnames.co.uk With Self-Hosting, you first of all need to be a member. Self-Hosting isn't really much more than your Buzztouch app control panel, but hosted on your website. There's no particular need to go Self-Hosted, however Self-Hosting is definitely something great. When you are looking at your hosting, it will take about 100MB minimum. More space will be needed if you get more plugins and apps. But to give you an insight, my panel takes 175MB, and it is loaded with plugins and apps. The installation process isn't actually too tricky. It looks overwhelming at first, but it is simply 15-30 minute of following instructions. Think about IKEA flatpack. Takes long, but easy.

I use Heart Internet and they have a particular curl policy that seems to catch out the buzztouch installation, so if you want an easy life, don't go there.

Has anyone tried Amazon Application Hosting? http://aws.amazon.com/application-hosting/ "You pay only for the compute power, storage, and other resources you use, with no long-term contracts or up-front commitments"

For starters, I went with the Arxive Personal package that MadRod recommended... let's see how we get on. :-)

@shenry I checked it out a little while ago but from memory it wasn't really worth it unless you expected potential server growth or needed the extra reliability (can't remember if I was looking at AU based prices though). Most US based entry level plans give you so much now for so little anyway.

Hey guys, Made a bit more progress this morning. I am as far as editing the config.php file to enter my details. I have entered the API and Secret details, but with regards to my APP_BT_ACCOUNT_USEREMAIL, I am getting the following error: Parse error: syntax error, unexpected '@' in /home/optipeng/public_html/BT-server/config.php on line 30 I was under the impression that my useremail would be the email address I use associated with logging in... is this not the case? Hope someone can help... :-/

I did that, on the config.php? But for some reason on that screenshot the secret doesn't look like the same amount of characters, and the API url doesn't match what I have in the php doc.

Thats what I have tried, but unfortunately it leads me back to this... Parse error: syntax error, unexpected ':' in /home/optipeng/public_html/BT-server/config.php on line 34 The only way I can seem to get any sort of control panel is to leave out the http:// for the API URL.
