Emulator not starting

Good evening, I am having problems trying to get the emulator started. Everytime I try to load my app, it starts but then shows the cancel message. I have tried to delete and re-create different versions of the AVD and still get the same error. Anyone else have similar problems and if so do you have the solution? Thanks in advance, Howard

Hi Howard, You can try to reboot your machine, and then try again. Or, you can try starting the emulator before you run the app, and it "should" find the running emulator. But that seems to be hit or miss for me. Mark

Thanks Mark, for the quick response. Just to verify, I am using Google 3.0, API 11 Is that correct? Thanks, Howard

For BTv3, which I hope you're using, you want to use Android 4.0 libraries. Not the Google libraries. Mark

If you have an android device I highly recommend just plugging it in and zoila! I went nuts for weeks trying to get the emulator to work. Every since I took the suggestion to use my own device everything has gone smoother from there. Now I can view my in design mode app all day and night and play around with it to see what it would look like on my actual phone. I have an HTCOne and dont even recognize the emulators anyhow. Not sure whats up with the emulators in eclipse, but as you can see many people dont even like eclipse. After figuring and learning the ins and outs it gets so much easier from there.

Thanks Moe, So what I am actually doing now, using Dropbox to transfer the apk to my phone which isn't too bad, but if I can actually plug the phone in and do it that way that would be awesome. I have the Droid 4, and was wondering if there are any instructions on how to do that? thanks, Howard

Hey Howard, the instructions I received were pretty simple, more simple than setting up an emulator. I simply plugged my HTCone into the usb port (basic charging cord) and eclipse automatically picked it up. It worked so smooth and flawless. I didn't have to do anything special. I am sure if you need a play by play there is one somewhere in the forum, but honestly, connecting my phone, to my laptops usb, while eclipse is running, let it find the phone, then while in eclipse, hit run as android application and the actual device was selected automatically over the emulator. Let me know if you run into any issues.

Wow that does sound easy and cool. I have to try that tonight. Do you know what mode the phone needs to be in? Thanks, Howard

Yes, MTP Mode... and have USB Debugging checked. You should be able to go to settings and easily click the allow usb debugging. I have an HTCOne, thats what I did :Settings- More, Mobile Network Sharing - HTC Sync Manager ( or whatever your phone connects to) Check always accepts requests to connect( enables USB Debugging). Heres info for the droid 4 ( This is in case others come looking) USB Debugging Mode - DROID 4 by MOTOROLA From a home screen, select Apps ( Apps menu icon located at the bottom). Select Settings. Note If the application icon is missing, select App menu filter (located at the top) then select All apps. Select Developer options. Select USB debugging to enable / disable. Note Enabled when an indicator is present. If presented with Allow USB debugging, select OK Also Be sure like GoNorthwest said... use Android 4.0 libraries. Not the Google libraries.

Yep, it is that simple. Just go into the Settings app on your phone, poke around a bit, and you'll find the option to enable USB debugging. Then just connect your phone up while Eclipse is running, and it should recognize it, and start logging to LogCat. If you're running a Windows machine, you'll likely have to install device drivers for your individual phone first...you can get those from your phone support site. For Mac, you shouldn't have to do anything. Mark
