GoDaddy to HostGator migration

Hey guys, I am now seriously considering taking the jump and migrating my self hosted from Godaddy to Host Gator. Has anyone done this before? Any pitfall to watch out for? Not too sure how to go about it. I know that I have to reinstall the CP but can I move my existing apps along with the database? I have quite a few apps for clients and I want to take a minimum risk. Any advice before I start would be super duper welcome. :) Farcat

I haven't moved self hosted stuff, but I do have a few tips. There are two ways to go about doing this: 1- Download the files from your current host and copy this over to the new host. All you need to change is some info in the config file. 2- Redownload the BT Self-Hosted on your BT account, and then upload it to the server in the usual way. After you've done this, upload the 'files' directory from your old server to the new control panel. I haven't done this before, and I would say that Option 2 is the safest bet you should take. I'm only listing what I would do, but I am very confident that Option 2 would work, as these are the steps you'd take if you updated your BT self hosted (ie. 2.1.8 to 2.1.9).

I moved from GoDaddy to HostGator about two years ago. They had, may still have, a "managed migration". For a small fee one of their techs would actually do it all for you. Once that's done you should also have them open the appropriate ports for push (you can find those ports online in these forums). Before you do anything make sure you have a backup, and a backup plan that includes how to use that backup, in case something doesn't work right. Tim

Hi, Just to add some info: 1. You also have to backup your database and import that on the new host (this is where all your data is stored). 2. after that you must adjust the Configuration Data Url and the Report to Cloud Url (in the core properties of your new control panel) so everything will point to the (correct) new server. 3. You have to wait to delete everything from the old server if you have apps live in the store. This is because the apps in the store still look for the old server. You should update all your apps in the store with the new json from the new control panel so they point to the right server (copy the json data from the new server in your control panel and put that in the config.txt. Make sure you don't forget to send the 'live mode data' version to the store. Best Regards, Danny

I was going to mention it, but completely forgot, so thanks Tim for mentioning it. Make sure that you have a backup. Number One rule! Even having regular backups for your server is a good idea. I have a regular system where my website server backups to my Time Capsule every week.

Hi @Higgey, I haven't made the move yet, I am waiting for my yearly subscription to run out. My main issue with GoDaddy was Push notification but I found another service (Pushwhoosh.com) that went around the issue. So moving to a new host isn't that urgent for me now. Good luck. Cheers, Farcat

Thanks, Farcat. Think I'll stay out for now, too. Cheers, John.
